Restoration Of MoPac Depot Multi-Modal Transit Facility
The City of Hot Springs purchased a 12.5-acre tract for a new Transportation Plaza in 1992. In 1995 the City bought the MoPac Depot and hired Taylor/Kempkes Architects for a three phase planning and development project.
Phase I included planning and building for a Multi-Modal Transportation Facility as well as the remodel and restoration of the historic MoPac Depot from its former restaurant use. This occurred from 1996-1998 and the opening of Phase I occurred in 1998.
Phase IIA began next and included the Bus Loading Pavilion and Public Parking Facilities as well as a Transportation Museum in the restored MoPac Depot Lobby.
This was finished and opened in 2000 as construction of Phase IIB began. This phase included Bus Parking as well as landscaped Pedestrian Walks and a Bridge that connects the Plaza with the developing Hot Springs Greenway. This was completed in January 2002.
This project was presented an “Outstanding Contemporary Architecture in an Historic Setting” award by the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas.
